Bespoke cover illustration and graphic design for Yannick van Sleen's doctoral thesis
A little while ago, Yannick approached me to illustrate and design the cover of his thesis book. I absolutely loved working with a bright colour palette when illustrating and designing the cover! It was a really interesting project to work on. Yannick already had a rough idea of what he wanted to show on the cover, so we then further developed that idea. Afterwards, I made an initial sketch for the cover art with graphite pencil as well as a mock up including the colour sketch.
Upon receiving the feedback on the sketch and the colour sketch mockup, I made a first version of the illustration, scanned it in and coloured it digitally. This coloured version is shown on the right.
The sketch was taken into Indesign and all text for the cover was added. A matching bookmark was also designed. The book was then sent out to be printed. Some impressions of the process are shown below.

The initial sketch was coloured digitally to create a so-called 'colour sketch'. The text to be displayed on the cover was also added.

Upon receiving feedback, a first version of the cover illustration was made using graphite.

All text was added to the cover and the book was sent out to be printed...
Collaborating with Anna went very smoothly. At first, we made a few concrete and sound agreements to guide the process, which resulted in a pleasant and efficient collaboration. I also really enjoyed that the design directly reflected my directions and feedback. It was a really good experience!
